Past and Present
A family-owned company since its auspicious conception in the 1920s, APT had its beginnings when Bill McGeary (a Mechanical Fitter & Turner by trade) built his first bus by hand. When a tram strike affected the city, he had the entrepreneurship to seize an opportunity to offer transport to the people of Melbourne.
Through Bill’s son Geoff, APT was formed, and in the 1960s and 1970s this humble bus company evolved into one of the leading travel company’s in Australia. Such innovation continues to thrive within the APT Group today, now a multi-brand business with an extensive global portfolio of touring and cruising products still owned and run by the McGeary family.
APT company owner, Geoff McGeary, was recently awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division for service to Tourism in this year’s Australia Day 2014 Honours List. Announced by the Governor-General, the Honours List provides national and formal recognition for Australians who have made a significant contribution to their communities.
Commenting on the award, Geoff said, “It is a privilege to have received such a prestigious award, especially in recognition for doing something that I truly love. Helping Australians to explore the beauty of their own country and also to uncover the secrets of countries further afield, in a way that is respectful and harmonious to the cultures and environments they visit”.
Now, with a third generation of the family Directing the APT Group's success, the benefits of the company's family-style culture are increasingly apparent. While pursuing a global vision, the unwavering focus is on exceeding customer expectations a delivering an unforgettable holiday experience for each and every individual.
The success that APT has enjoyed is testament to the pioneering spirit and family values upon which the company was founded, and upon which it continues to operate and flourish today.
