Geoff McGeary awarded for his significant contribution to tourism.
Discover the spirit of APT, one of Australia's travel leaders.
APT has evolved into one of the leading travel company’s in Australia.

"These days we travel all over the globe in style and comfort. I guess we are known for that. But for me nothing fuels my sense of adventure like Outback Australia. I return whenever I can and I'm always overwhelmed by a sense of pride in this vast and ancient country. As I tell my friends, your travels are not complete until you experience Australia’s last frontier for yourself."

Geoff McGeary OAM (APT Founder & Owner)

Australian Story

A school bus driver in Bayside Victoria, it was in 1964, that Geoff McGeary took a group of students from
St Leonard's College on a camping trip to Central Australia. In those days, the roads were dirt, they travelled in a school bus and accommodation options barely existed. However it must have been a hell of a trip, as today APT offers more than 100 different holidays to every continent on earth.

On that trip, a new era in the Australian travel industry was born – as was the spirit of a new travel company, APT. Five decades on, the level of quality may be much higher, but APT still holds true to that spirit of adventure, passion for travel, and love of the Australian Outback.

Passion Knowledge Experience

Geoff ran his first tour into the vast and rugged frontier of the Kimberley over 40 years ago. In this time, APT has built unique partnerships with the traditional landowners and created a network of exclusive wilderness lodges in key locations that provide superb access to the Kimberley’s gems. Accommodation didn't exist so we built it.

This pioneering spirit shows. APT is recognised as the touring specialists in Australia and in particular, the Kimberley. More passengers choose APT for Australia than any other premium tour operator. Similarly, APT has hosted more people in the Kimberley than any other operator.

The company's reputation for traveller satisfaction and quality operation has been recognised with several tourism awards. Including most being voted the ‘Best Domestic Tour Operator’ at the 2014 National Travel Industry Awards. This is third consecutive year that APT has been awarded this covered title. While proud of the recognition from our industry peers, even greater reward comes from the satisfaction of our travellers, their on-going patronage, and personal recommendations to friends.

Today, Geoff’s daughter Lou and her husband Rob manage APT’s Outback Australia program. “For us, it’s about showcasing the very best of Australia, but it’s more than a list of the best inclusions and itineraries, for which APT is renowned. It’s a feeling of freedom! A freedom that you can leave your wallet and watch at home and everything is already taken care of. You’re free to immerse yourself in the destination, and the wonderful company of your travel companions, knowing that APT has already thought of everything to make your holiday an unforgettable one”. Lou Tandy (nee McGeary)

And what of our Founder?

Geoff is still a relentless traveller seeking out great new places to explore, and the best modes to do it. He still brings the same enthusiasm and attention to detail to the office while he also oversees APT’s strategic direction.
